The Truth About Beauty Oils

The Truth About Beauty Oils

By Heather Leslie Tabor

If you are still using coconut oil for everything from cooking to deep conditioning your hair raise your hand? The trend hit like a freight train, and most people never got off at the station. The hard truth? Coconut oil is NOT a cure for everything. If you read on I will give you all the information you need to select the appropriate oils for your beauty routine.

Have you ever wondered why they do not make a one size fits all beauty oil that you can apply from head to toe for hair, skin, and nails? There are 3 foundational reasons. 1. Molecular makeup matters! I am going to get all scientific on you in the next paragraph so “bare” with me. (Yes that is a skincare pun). 2. Build up is bad for many reasons which we will discuss. 3. The product’s weight plays a huge part in how your hair looks, and feels.

Some of my favorite products for smoothing and healing hair.

1. Molecular make up matters because to work the oil has to be able to penetrate your hairs cuticle layer or you skin’s pores. If you use an oil with a large molecule it will sit on top of your hair rather than seep into the cuticle layer. Oils do more good from within. If they can’t get in they simply coat the outside of the hair strand. It might make it feel better immediately, but as soon as you shampoo it will be dry again. If the oil can get inside it can heal deeply rather than make it feel better temporarily. The same is true for your skin. It must be able to penetrate the skin surface.

2. Build up is bad. Large molecules that sit on the surface of your hair, and skin tend to build up over time. This build up can stop your expensive professional products from doing their job. Pro products are usually designed with the correct size molecule to penetrate your hair shaft or your skin, and work really well. If they are blocked by a build up of larger molecules they will only be semi effective. This applies to the build up you get from drug store brand products as well. They block the good stuff from doing it’s job! Detox your hair with a maxi wash or exfoliate well before you switch to your new professional brand products for better results.

3. Choose the right weight. Your products oil or otherwise NEED to be the appropriate weight for your hair and skin. Finding the right weight is tricky because everyone is different. If your hair is course or wiry you can use a heavier weight oil. If your skin is already oily you may need a lighter weight oil based product. The absolute BEST way to determine what product you need is to ask your Hairstylist or Esthetician. At my salon we do FREE consultations and skin assessments.

Hard Water & Your Hair

Hard water

There are 3 main reasons our hair feels bad. Environmental, internal, and chemical damage. Today we want to talk about the big one in our area. Environmental damage. The hard water here causes a build up like you have never seen before. The end result is dry, damaged, straw like hair texture. The best products don’t solve the problem. Your stylist can’t seem to fix it. You have tried EVERYTHING! Lets get intentional about targeting hard water specifically Here are 3  of the best things you could do to battle the hard water problem you may be having with your hair…

  1. Having a water softener obviously helps but you should know the damage you see on your hair from hard water is rooted in the mineral build up the hard water causes. When you soften the water your system most likely uses sodium which is another mineral. While it helps you are still adding mineral content to your hair which is why in certain areas you will need more than a softener to fix your hard water hair problem. I recommend a filter for your shower head. They are easily attachable and will help to filter some of the mineral from your water before it ever touches your hair.
  2. The filter is not enough on it’s own. You will need to manually remove the build up at least once every other month using an ultra cleansing shampoo. I would like to recommend products that use essential oils etc. to remove build up. Harsher clarifying shampoos have molecules that scratch your cuticle layer and can cause more damage than it helps. Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo is on my recommended list. It targets mineral build up specifically without stripping your hair of it’s color, and natural oils. I also like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. Kevin Murphy is always doing something to nourish your hair while it does it’s main job.
  3. Protect your hair by getting a glaze in the salon. Glazes are not super expensive, don’t take a lot of time, end with a gorgeous blow out, and protect your hair not only from hard water mineral build up but other harsh environmental damage like the sun. Anybody can get a glaze whether they color their hair or not. They make glazes in every shade from clear to bright red. You can have fun with the shade or keep it clean and clear. Your glaze will also add shine and luminosity as an added benefit.

I can think of 100 other ways to protect and cure hard water mineral build up on your hair but I wanted to focus mainly on these 3 for today. Mostly I recommend having a Hairstylist who is in charge of your hairs health and well being as well as it’s color, cut, and style. Your stylist should be able to recommend home care at different points during the year to keep your hair as healthy, and happy as possible.

If you are interested in starting a home care hair regimen to solve any hair problem you may have please feel free to reach out to us at Pomme Salon. We always offer free consultations, and advice to anybody, and everybody whether they are a client or not because we care about hair so freaking much!
