5 Beauty Myths Debunked

5 Beauty Myths Debunked

by Aimee Fisher

Time to debunk a few beauty beliefs. I know with all the information from the internet, and beauty blogs, sometimes the line of myth and truth is blurred. I’ve chosen 5 myths that I feel need to be addressed.

Lip Plumping

You can plump your lips at home

You cannot do your own lip plumping! Not only is it dangerous but it can cause broken capillaries and even BRUISING! And as far as “plumping lip gel” really, your lips are irritated with ingredients that cause swelling. So stick with the Licenced professional when it comes to your lips. Your lips will thank you.

Lash Extensions

You can get a full set of lashes in some places for $40

Lash tabs are NOT the same as individual lash extensions. Lash tabs, or flares, are chunks of lashes that lay across several of your natural eyelashes with a glue that is only meant to stay for 24 hours. Individual lash extensions are glued to ONE lash at a time, cost a little more, and meant to last weeks. So you may find a sweet deal on lashes…..just be sure you understand what you’re getting into.

Microdermabrasion

Causes microscopic cuts on the skin

This advanced exfoliation technique CAN cause microscopic cuts in the skin. If the service is not performed by a licensed professional using the appropriate amount of pressure, the correct “gritted” tip for different areas of the face and proper suction. If you do the proper research to find a good Esthetician it is very safe and a It is very possible to have negative effects from Microdermabrasion if not done properly. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again…Stick with the Licenced professional!

Chemical Peel

Leaves you peeling in sheets and stuck indoors for a full week

Not every chemical peel will have dead skin peeling off in sheets! Chemical peels are an excellent way to improve the skin’s appearance but you don’t have to be shunned from the world for 5 days! There are a variety of chemical peels that are less invasive and some don’t even peel. It is also beautiful to pair a peel with Microdermabrasion for similar results to a heavy peel without the down time.

Cleansing your skin

It is ok to skip days when it comes to washing your face

Believe it or not there is a rumor going around that you do not have to wash your face every day. Consider the rumor debunked. You absolutely must clean your face everyday. Even when you don’t wear makeup you must clean off the oil production, the dirt, debris….the environmental pollution. A clean face is helpful in preventing breakouts as well as helping cellular turnover for healthy skin. Wash your face….even when you’re sleepy.

3 Reasons Why EVERYONE Needs A “ Serum ”

Guest Article by Aimee Fisher

Most of us need to know what a serum is to know why you need one. A serum is a concentrated version of other products excluding the fluff, the junk, the extra. With more stuff can come less absorption making the product less effective. The molecular makeup of a serum is also very different from a cream moisturizer for example. Serum’s tend to have smaller molecules allowing for a deeper level of absorption. Don’t throw out all your creams, lotions, and moisturizer just yet! Sometimes your skin needs multi levels of care, but that’s for another article. Today I am here to discuss the 3 reasons why everyone needs a serum.

Reason 1. You need a serum because of what is NOT going to be found in them. Serums do not have oils that keep water from evaporating. Most serums are water based which allows the product to soak into your skin as opposed to sitting on TOP of your skin. Most people are in desperate need of internal hydration.

Reason 2 is how much active ingredient you will be exposing your skin to. The active ingredients are what is in your skincare that is producing actual results. If you’re trying to soften fine lines, and wrinkles the active ingredients you might find could include retinoids, vitamin c, hydroxy acids, and peptides. These are the real heroes out there doing the dirty work for aging skin. Long story short active ingredients get results.

Reason 3 is everybody has an issue with their skin. Yes, even those of you who have glowing perfect skin. You need to be worried about prevention if you plan on keeping it that way. Nobody is immune to aging skin. Serums can minimize hyperpigmentation, prevent clogged pores, and soften fine lines and wrinkles. Whatever your goal is there is a serum out there just for you.

Now that you know just 3 of the reasons why you should be using serums in addition to other at home skin care you need to know which one is best for you. The only way to get complete custom skin care is to consult a professional. Find a local Esthetician that can give you a skin analysis and recommend the best serum for the result you desire. I am always here to help if you live in the Austin / Dripping Springs Hill Country area, and you can book me online at www.pommespa.com by selecting the book online tab. You can also call my front desk at 512-894-2611. I would love to meet you and take care of your skin.

The Worlds Most Meaningful Maintenance…

I want to discuss with you something that’s weighed heavy on my heart for some time. We have entered the era of self care. People all over the world are prioritizing things that matter to them. For many especially women, and mothers we may be prioritizing our self care for the first time in our entire lives. This is HUGE. As we enter the wide world of self care we might find ourselves in a sea of ways to achieve a heightened sense of well being. It can get overwhelming.

First, let me say you absolutely deserve to be doing this. We provide maintenance for our houses, businesses, belongings. Hell even our cities are providing maintenance for our streets, and public places. Self care can be absolutely anything that you value. Of course anybody should encourage you to practice hobbies, and anything else that brings you joy as a form of self care. With that being said I recently saw a meme going around that said something along the lines of Self Care doesn’t just mean getting your nails done and shopping. It was designed to remind the every day consumer that their health is important to. It encouraged people to do things like exercise as a form of self care. Don’t mis read me here… I am 100% behind healthy habits and how they promote self care in all kinds of glorious ways. But I came here to make outwardly taking care our our bodies okay too. It is so easy to consider beauty routines a sort of lavish extra. It really IS NOT. ” Beauty ” routines are BOMB for an assortment of reasons, but really because it is a way of taking care of your body, and your doing it just for you.

Let me just enlighten you on how many body maintenance services the beauty world offers. The list is endless but the main ones include hair care and all that goes with it, waxing, lash extensions, nails, pedicures, massage, and so much more. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Also within those categories come variations of services. On average people find 2 or 3 types of beauty maintenance manageable at most. Some people get their hair and nails done. Some people prefer to spend all their time and money on hair extensions. Some ladies LOVE their faux lashes and make it a priority to get extensions on them every 2 weeks. I have had them and trust… Lash Extensions are game changers. BUT (and thats a big but) as much as I love getting my hair done and live for a perfect set of lashes. I want to talk to you about the most under rated self care service of all time.

FACIALS. Let me tell you why. Your skin is worn front and center right up on your face from the day you are born until the day you die. Your nails grow out, and your hair will eventually all be cut off and replaced by new, but your skin. That stays with you forever. There are things taking place behind the scenes like cellular turnover to keep your skin fresh, but it’s just not the same. The best advice I ever give my clients as a beauty professional is to incorporate regular facials into their outward body maintenance, and self care routines. Skincare seems like even more of a luxury than getting our roots colored or our nails done because it does not grow out with an obvious line of demarcation reminding us to care for it again. That does not make it any less important. It is actually the most important thing you can ever do for yourself. Those monthly facials may not seem like they are making all that much of a difference until suddenly your 70 years old, and you have half as many fine lines and dark spots, and wrinkles as your peers.

It is also just as much about health as it is about beauty. Your skin being the largest organ of your entire body is the most prone to attack from environmental stress. Those pores are soaking up everything you come in contact with. That makes choices about what we put on our skin SO much more important than we make them. Every body wash, glitter, makeup product, lotion, even shampoo we decide to use enters our body, and our blood stream directly through our skin.

Your Esthetician really is your best friend. Please go in and make a relationship with a Skincare Professional who can guide you on…

1. How often and what types of skincare services you need.

2. What you should be using at home.

3. What products to stay away from for long term health, and wellness.

4. Information on when you might need to get further help from a dermatologist or a doctor.

Your Esthi is on the front lines with you doing battle. Be the best you can be to your own body by making skincare a priority. I encourage you to consider if you must which beauty routine or service you might be willing to trade in for regular facials, and skincare.

If you are near us you can always book an appointment with our Skincare Specialist by visiting our website, and selecting the book online tab. If you are looking for a new Esthi you can start with a basic google search in your area. Remember any good Esthetician will always do an in depth consultation, and skin assessment and customize your services. There is no one size fits all in skincare.

The Truth About Beauty Oils

The Truth About Beauty Oils

By Heather Leslie Tabor

If you are still using coconut oil for everything from cooking to deep conditioning your hair raise your hand? The trend hit like a freight train, and most people never got off at the station. The hard truth? Coconut oil is NOT a cure for everything. If you read on I will give you all the information you need to select the appropriate oils for your beauty routine.

Have you ever wondered why they do not make a one size fits all beauty oil that you can apply from head to toe for hair, skin, and nails? There are 3 foundational reasons. 1. Molecular makeup matters! I am going to get all scientific on you in the next paragraph so “bare” with me. (Yes that is a skincare pun). 2. Build up is bad for many reasons which we will discuss. 3. The product’s weight plays a huge part in how your hair looks, and feels.

Some of my favorite products for smoothing and healing hair.

1. Molecular make up matters because to work the oil has to be able to penetrate your hairs cuticle layer or you skin’s pores. If you use an oil with a large molecule it will sit on top of your hair rather than seep into the cuticle layer. Oils do more good from within. If they can’t get in they simply coat the outside of the hair strand. It might make it feel better immediately, but as soon as you shampoo it will be dry again. If the oil can get inside it can heal deeply rather than make it feel better temporarily. The same is true for your skin. It must be able to penetrate the skin surface.

2. Build up is bad. Large molecules that sit on the surface of your hair, and skin tend to build up over time. This build up can stop your expensive professional products from doing their job. Pro products are usually designed with the correct size molecule to penetrate your hair shaft or your skin, and work really well. If they are blocked by a build up of larger molecules they will only be semi effective. This applies to the build up you get from drug store brand products as well. They block the good stuff from doing it’s job! Detox your hair with a maxi wash or exfoliate well before you switch to your new professional brand products for better results.

3. Choose the right weight. Your products oil or otherwise NEED to be the appropriate weight for your hair and skin. Finding the right weight is tricky because everyone is different. If your hair is course or wiry you can use a heavier weight oil. If your skin is already oily you may need a lighter weight oil based product. The absolute BEST way to determine what product you need is to ask your Hairstylist or Esthetician. At my salon we do FREE consultations and skin assessments.

My personal favorite beauty oils….

Leneor Greyl Magnolia oil( great for hair & skin )

Keune Argan Oil Light ( hair )

Pur Erb Deep Cleansing Oil ( skin )

Blossom Cuticle Oil ( nails )

Kevin Murphy Young.Again Oil (hair)

I wish you the best of luck in your beauty journey. We are always here for your at Pomme Salon & Spa. Visit our website for more information on our products and services. Feel free to comment with questions! We personally respond to every one.

Hard Water & Your Hair

Hard water

There are 3 main reasons our hair feels bad. Environmental, internal, and chemical damage. Today we want to talk about the big one in our area. Environmental damage. The hard water here causes a build up like you have never seen before. The end result is dry, damaged, straw like hair texture. The best products don’t solve the problem. Your stylist can’t seem to fix it. You have tried EVERYTHING! Lets get intentional about targeting hard water specifically Here are 3  of the best things you could do to battle the hard water problem you may be having with your hair…

  1. Having a water softener obviously helps but you should know the damage you see on your hair from hard water is rooted in the mineral build up the hard water causes. When you soften the water your system most likely uses sodium which is another mineral. While it helps you are still adding mineral content to your hair which is why in certain areas you will need more than a softener to fix your hard water hair problem. I recommend a filter for your shower head. They are easily attachable and will help to filter some of the mineral from your water before it ever touches your hair.
  2. The filter is not enough on it’s own. You will need to manually remove the build up at least once every other month using an ultra cleansing shampoo. I would like to recommend products that use essential oils etc. to remove build up. Harsher clarifying shampoos have molecules that scratch your cuticle layer and can cause more damage than it helps. Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo is on my recommended list. It targets mineral build up specifically without stripping your hair of it’s color, and natural oils. I also like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. Kevin Murphy is always doing something to nourish your hair while it does it’s main job.
  3. Protect your hair by getting a glaze in the salon. Glazes are not super expensive, don’t take a lot of time, end with a gorgeous blow out, and protect your hair not only from hard water mineral build up but other harsh environmental damage like the sun. Anybody can get a glaze whether they color their hair or not. They make glazes in every shade from clear to bright red. You can have fun with the shade or keep it clean and clear. Your glaze will also add shine and luminosity as an added benefit.

I can think of 100 other ways to protect and cure hard water mineral build up on your hair but I wanted to focus mainly on these 3 for today. Mostly I recommend having a Hairstylist who is in charge of your hairs health and well being as well as it’s color, cut, and style. Your stylist should be able to recommend home care at different points during the year to keep your hair as healthy, and happy as possible.

If you are interested in starting a home care hair regimen to solve any hair problem you may have please feel free to reach out to us at Pomme Salon. We always offer free consultations, and advice to anybody, and everybody whether they are a client or not because we care about hair so freaking much!

Are you using the right cleanser for your skin

We have all had bad skin days at one point or another. Your skin can be too dry, oily, uneven or maybe you’ve even had acne breakouts. Here’s the real question…what do we expect from our cleanser? You may think our cleanser should just be able to remove make-up and dirt leaving our skin feeling soft and healthy, but you could be using the wrong cleanser for your face type. Most people don’t realize your skin type actually changes.  Be it weather, change in hormones, stress or maybe just age. Your cleanser (and moisturizer) should be able to keep up. I’m going to talk about 3 different skin types and the 3 cleansers your should be using at home for optimal results.

lemieuxcosmeticsnewbanner

Skin Type 1-Dry Skin

You’ve seen it, its flaky and splotchy, make-up doesn’t look its best and it MAY be your cleanser. Hydrating cream and oil based cleansers are excellent for dry skin but did you know that exfoliating may be the most beneficial thing you can do for your skin type. I would recommend the Le Mieux Exfoliating Cleanser. It is specifically designed to cleanse and remove excess build up of dead skin cells.

Skin Type 2-Oily Skin

Oily skin is shiny, feels greasy, and usually your pores are very large. You might even have clogged pores and blackheads which makes it difficult to apply make-up. It may feel like it’s actually sliding off your face. Most people go straight for a stronger often gel based cleanser, but did you know as counterproductive as it may seem an oil based cleanser it the best thing you could use. Your skin is over producing oil because you keep stripping it thinking you are overly dry. This signals your body to produce even more oil.  If you stop that vicious cycle and give your skin a little oil your body will halt its oil production believing you don’t need anymore. Leaving your skin feeling clean and hydrated. I would recommend Le Mieux Phyto-Marine Cleansing Lotion.

Skin Type 3-Combination and Acne prone skin

Combination skin is tricky. Acne happens for a million reasons, sometimes we never really know why it happens. But since it does, it may be difficult to find the best cleanser. The truth is there may not be a one size fits all solution for your skin type. My best recommendation is to alternate between an exfoliating cleanser once a week to remove dead skin cells which cause dry skin to build up, and a foam based cleanser to remove excess oil without stripping your skin the rest of the time. I would recommend Le Mieux Peptide Foam Cleanser.

If you are experiencing dry skin, oily skin, acne or any other skin concerns please consider taking them to a professional esthetician. We can provide several services such as Dermaplaning,  Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, LED, Micro current, Serum treatments and custom masks. I would be more than happy to help you with any skin concerns.

5 Autumn Ideas for your hair

Happy Fall sweet clients and friends. With a new season comes change. In other places you watch the leaves change color and slip gracefully to their crunchy grave on the ground, but here in Texas we bust out boots and sweaters on Monday, and slip into a tank top on Tuesday. We wonder if we will sweat through our Halloween Costumes or have to ruin them with a sweater. Long story short the one thing you can bet on is things are changing. People like to change their hair, their clothes, their flavors…. Queue Pumpkin Spice Season. Here are some Autumn ideas for fun little changes you may want to make. Spoiler alert all of these ideas are GOOD FOR YOU!

  1. Everybody wants to change their hair color when the seasons change. That is a given, but with all the heaters coming on we suck every bit of moisture out of the air. Couple that with the summer damage we have done, and you hair is probably fried. I would like to suggest that it is the PERFECT time of year for Hair Treatments. Put that moisture back in there baby.
  2. Change up the product girl! It is time to bust out your hair oils, smoothing products and thicker conditioners. If you get oily hair, have fine hair or a lot of damage I would like to introduce my new favorite line of products… Hairstory is a whole new way of shampooing. One product to rule them all. No more Shampoo and then Conditioner. I can only share my experience. The non suds nature was odd for me at first but once my hair dried I could not stop touching it. I knew this product was amazing, and the shampoo brush is the perfect perk. Dare I say my split ends are better… Yes I do. It is a pro product so you will need a link to buy. I will share mine here for you to take a look. xoxo     Hairstory Link
  3. Everybody wants to go darker for the fall but when I think fall I immediately see Pumpkin Spice, Caramel, Cinnamon, fallen leaves, Hot Chocolate… I think warmth. Ask your Hairstylist if you have the skin tone to go in a copper, red or golden direction instead of just plain dark. You can always do this in a semi permanent which will allow for easy change if you want to go back after the seasons change.  golden20181229_142056 cropped-fb_img_1489564670343.jpg
  4. I know it seems typical to grow your hair out to keep you warm during the winter, but consider going in the opposite direction. A textured bob paired with a beautiful scarf and some chunky earrings is a very trendy way to spend your fall season.
  5. This suggestion is only hair related in the sense that I own a small local Hair Salon in Dripping Springs, but I am going to throw it out there anyways. As Christmas approaches SHOP LOCAL! Your small local businesses need your support more than the typical chains do. Gift cards, stocking stuffers, packages, products and so much more unique, and interesting finds await you in that sweet local shop you may not have noticed before. You can expect to find a local business guide for Christmas shopping in my next article.

Until then. Thank you for reading all about the 5 Autumn Ideas I had for your hair. As always I am available for all of your questions, comments, and ideas for future articles. I hope you are having a wonderful Fall Season so far.

Peace. Love. Pomme

All The Things Curly Girls NEED TO KNOW

Hey there curly girl… I see you. Silently struggling over there. The truth is whether you choose to see it or not your hair is glorious. Many women want your hair, but few are blessed with it. The trick is learning how to harness all of that energy. Once you get that down it is much easier to tame the wild spirit your hair possesses and make it look “on purpose”. There are several steps to this magic. Don’t be overwhelmed because a lot of the process is not recurring, and eventually your hair should be very low maintenance.

Step 1: Acceptance is key. Curly hair is many things in addition to absolutely gorgeous. It is frizzy by nature, it is not even, it is wild, and it is NOT SMOOTH. As long as you are expecting your hair to be something that it is not you will be unhappy with it. I know it is disappointing to have expectations that can’t be met, but if you can see that your hair does not have to be smooth or even to be breath taking you can find a place of peace about your hair texture, and eventually learn to love it.

Step 2: Find a Curly Hair Stylist. Someone who has experience with cutting Curly Hair. A good Haircut makes a world of difference to Curly Girls. This is really important… most of the time anybody who is practiced and experienced enough will not be cheap. There are always exceptions to any rule, and I am sure there are many stylists who are amazing Curly Cutters but the odds are not in your favor. The good news is once you get your first appointment under your belt your Stylist can maintain the cut with a Dry Trim which is often less expensive then a full Haircut including shampoo and style.

Step 3: Let go of the idea that your Haircut has to be “even”. Curly hair is NOT EVEN. I call each little curl a ” Curl Family “. Some Curls are tighter and some are looser. Curls are like snowflakes no two Curl Families are exactly the same. If you apply tension and pull them straight down some will be longer and some will be shorter. If you pull it down and cut it even when the curl families spring up some will be super short and some will be longer depending on the curl pattern. TRUST ME on this… you do not want your hair cut “even”. If you feel that everything needs to be even, in order or completely balanced you will struggle endlessly with your curly hair.

Step 4: Don’t wash your hair every day. Curly hair is dry by nature. You need some of those natural oils to work their way down the hair shaft to keep your hair from being so dry. Instead just get in the shower and wet your hair. You can even condition the ends and comb with a wide tooth comb but skip the shampoo.

Step 5: Water activates your curl pattern so if your not a morning shower person keep a spray bottle of water handy to wet your curls and allow those curl families to reform after you have slept on them all night.

Step 6: Stop brushing your hair so much. Before your shower get a traditional hair brush and really brush that hair from scalp to ends. This will more evenly distribute your natural oils. The brush will pick oil up from the scalp and transfer it down the hair shaft to your dry ends. Cue the celebration! Then you can hop in the shower and reform your curl pattern. You can also detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb every time you condition. Other than these two moments you should not be brushing your curly hair at all. Brushing breaks up your curl families which causes all the frizz.

I know it can be frustrating to get used to a hair type that you never thought you wanted but if we can circle back to acceptance it really is the key to a long and happy life with your curls.

Biggest branding decision you will ever make…

This month I wanted to discuss one of the most important branding decisions I have ever made. To reduce the footprint within the beauty industry. That is a HUGE task and I honestly had no idea where to start. Here is what I did know. I wanted my business to mean something bigger than just beauty. I truly wanted to make a difference with this massive undertaking I had embarked upon. I did a ton of thinking and A LOT of research before I made up my mind. Ultimately I thought what could be bigger than taking care of the planet we live on!

We all know that we are making a foot print around here. Wether we are choosing to live obliviously or accept the cause and effect the fact remains that we are creating an environmental disturbance. We are creating items that nature was not designed to contain such as plastic. I set out to build a brand that promoted awareness within in the beauty industry about waste, recycling and making sustainable choices. It has been a long road and I definitely get push back. People inevitably want to do what is easy as opposed to what is right. Being the kind of leader who makes my Stylists think about our choices has not always been easy. It also requires a very special team, but… I have found it and boy are we making waves!

First I committed to Beauty Brand Kevin Murphy which has an ENTIRE web page dedicated to ” The Choices We Make” which is heavily littered  with sustainability and waste reduction efforts. It’s also a plus that Kevin Murphy is a very effective hair care line. Their treatments are amazing and all of their products work wonders in so many ways I can’t even begin. That is a whole other article.

All of your Stylists here at Pomme are also Certified Sustainable by Green Circle Salons.  We recover and re purpose 95% of beauty waste created in this salon. This includes items such as left over color, foils, hair, color tubes and more.

The other thing i pay close attention to is how many disposable items we use. We recently switched our disposable gloves out for reusable. Our Esthi uses washable cotton rounds, and we offer a Retail Recycling program where our clients can bring their shampoo and conditioner bottles back in and fill them for a discount.

Through this process I built a really strong belief in branding and want to encourage everybody to brand their business in whatever direction they feel passionate about. In the meantime if you would like to support our sustainability efforts pleas book your appointments through the salon by visiting our website at pommespa.com.

Experiences > Things

Experiences > Things

Hey sweet clients. Here is what has been on my mind lately. Things that have grown up around me and taken over my life. Somehow we accrue things that we want and believe will make us happy. Over time we build a life of things that we thought would fill us up. Thing after thing is cast aside and a new thing is brought in it’s place and somehow the void is not filled. We have also heaved ourselves a hefty portion of work to go along with that emptiness. All those things have to be taken care of, cleaned up and dealt with. I have been on a mission to replace some of the things I think I want with experiences instead. I have the idea that what I will take away from those genuine moments I spend with other people is more personal fulfillment then I could ever find in my things.

Don’t get me wrong. Nice things are nice. I would much rather purchase a quality item that I love and will last than anything else. By all means if you have a physical need fill it… but is it a need? I like to play would I rather. I am looking at a super cute coffee mug and I want it real bad. Would I rather have that mug or use that $15 towards a pedicure that I could go and experience with my BFF or one of my sisters. Would I rather use that money to buy myself a drink at happy hour with my amazing co workers. Would I rather use that extra money towards a relaxing massage or facial. The mug is nice. I have 15 of them at home sure but this one is shaped like a cat. It feels like a must. Well hell eventually you find yourself cleaning a sink full of coffee mugs in the morning before you go to work and wish like hell you had gotten that pedicure instead.

This is just a theory I am testing out at the moment. I would really like you to join the experiment and share your “experiences” (pun feverishly intended) with me. You can reach me via email at heather@pommespa.com or by commenting on this post. I can’t wait to hear what you did and your thoughts on if you felt more fulfilled afterwards.

I personally am working on integrating this method in my business by making my hair appointments more of an experience my for my clients. Every color appointment comes with a facial while your color processes. You wont have time to work or check your phone because you will be busy experiencing the appointment from start to finish. I am thinking of gently suggesting that my clients leave their devices in their bags and focus on the experience but I have not gotten there yet. I would love to catch your thoughts on that idea as well though.

Until we write again… Peace. Love. Pomme.
